Charlotte Zolotow celebrates her birthday on June 26th. Born in Norfolk, North Virginia, she is the well-known editor and author, who worked at Harper Junior Books for over 30 years and wrote such books as The Park Book (illus. by H.A. Rey), William's Doll (illus. by William Pene du Bois), and Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present (illus by Maurice Sendak). She became editorial director of her own imprint, Charlotte Zolotow Books, in 1987. From 1933 to 1936, she studied children's literature with Dr. Helen C. White at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In 1998, the Charlotte Zolotow Award was established by the Cooperative Center for Children's Books at that University, which is housed in a building named for Dr. White. Ms. Zolotow is the recipient of the Harper Gold Medal Award for Editorial Excellence, the University of Minnesota's 1968 Irwin Kerlan Award and the University of Southern Mississippi's 1990 Silver Medallion and a 1991 American Library Association resolution expressing gratitude for her contributions.
