Kathleen Baxter is a children’s literature consultant. She speaks all over the U.S.A. at schools, state and national school conferences, libraries, state and national library conferences, and does all-day seminars for the Bureau of Education and Research (www.ber.org) on The Best Children’s Books of the Decade and Connecting Boys with Books

In addition, she consults with and reads manuscripts for several children’s publishers, has written The Non-Fiction Booktalker column for School Library Journal since 1997, and is the author of four Gotcha books: Gotcha for Guys (Libraries Unlimited, 2006), Gotcha: Non-Fiction Booktalks to Get Kids Excited about Reading (Libraries Unlimited, 1999), Gotcha Again: More Non-Fiction Booktalks to Get Kids Excited about Reading (Libraries Unlimited, 2002), and Gotcha Covered: Still More Non-Fiction Booktalks to Get Kids Excited about Reading (Libraries Unlimited, 2005). Her fifth Gotcha book is the forthcoming Gotcha Good.

Kathy is a native of (and spent the first eighteen years of her life in) Walnut Grove, Minnesota, where Laura Ingalls Wilder lived in On the Banks of Plum Creek, so she figures she comes by her love of children’s books naturally. She has a B.A. from the College of Saint Catherine in Saint Paul, and a M.A. in Library Science from the University of Minnesota. She was the head of Children’s Library Services and Acquisitions in the Anoka County Library in suburban Minneapolis for more years than she cares to remember. She also worked for the Queens Borough Public Library in New York City for two years after college. She has taught children’s literature at the College of Saint Catherine, and written articles for Library Journal (on selling library discards on e-Bay) and Library Talk.

Kathy taught courses on dating and self-esteem at the U in Minneapolis, many singles groups and various community education programs, and gave a dozen talks for Nordstrom stores’ large-size fashion shows in such places as San Diego, San Francisco, and Anchorage. (She loved that job—part of the pay was that she got to pick out an outfit to give the speech in and keep. She looked at racks she never even knew existed in her normal life!)

She is a huge fan of Maud Hart Lovelace, author of the Betsy-Tacy books, and was the co-founder and first president of the Maud Hart Lovelace Society. Kathy served as a member of the 2001 Newbery Committee.
