Bake Me a Story
elementary school

“Bake me a Story” is an elementary level power point program about, well ... baking a story. Using the analogy of making pancakes, Apelqvist involves her students in the process of putting a story together. While most children this age have a good grasp of character, setting, and plot, “Bake me a Story” is designed to be a fun reminder of what they have already learned in the classroom. This program is best suited for children old enough to read and write.

Swede Dreams—One Writer's Journey
middle school, high school, adults

Swede Dreams is a presentation, based on Apelqvist’s work with the novel with the same name, about writing what you know, and learning what you don’t know, so you can write about it. The author discusses what goes into the creation of a novel; the good, the bad, and the daily work.

Comments from teachers who have attended Apelqvist's presentations:

“Apelqvist did a fabulous job presenting the story to our second graders. It is evident that she not only loves writing, but that she loves students. They enjoyed the entire presentation, from start to finish.”

“Apelqvist has a pleasant way of presenting herself and didn’t let things drop or go quiet for too long. Just enough wait time to allow students to think.”

“Excellent lesson preparation and so well organized. The PowerPoint presentation was great and I so enjoyed Apelqvist’s personal stories.”

“When the children heard that Apelqvist revised over thirty times on one piece, it really made an impression. I think we’ll get a lot of mileage out of that back in the classroom.”

“Very nice organization of materials! The students thoroughly enjoyed it.”
